Trademe - major outages & other screwups

Irrational behaviour and incomprehensible decisions 101 - this is the place. If they're really silly, you could win a chocolate fish.* (* Highly unlikely and they're only virtual chocolate fish)

Ghost listings? Wonder how many on the site...
Electronics -> Batteries -> sort by lowest price, and there is half page of non-existing listings, closing in 6 to 9 hours:

When clicking on them:

all the auctions tripping that error appear to be from the same trader and strangely have no price or reserve showing.

i thought maybe the trader listings have been suspended while he is being investigated or something.

However if you do an expired search it get more bizarre

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/SearchR ... region=100" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

most of the auctions closed normally with a $1.50 Buy now, however there is one auction again with no Price.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-ph ... 016224.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Price: $0.00 per item
This auction is one of those `add a quantity` types that TM introduces a number of months ago.
don`t ask me how you can enter a price of $0.00.
I tried it and it wouldn't let me continue
There Appears to be YET ANOTHER Bug somewhere in that feature.

Here's a live auction

If they're legitimate listings, the seller will NOT be pleased.
Google, the answer to so many questions!

TM seem to be intent on destroying the expired auctions search functionality

I reported here regarding how the various filter no longer work on the search result pages of expired auction.

Now it appears the `sort by` option to re-sort the page by Lowest Buy Now is not working either

http://www.trademe.co.nz/browse/searchr ... region=100" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

oddly the "Highest Price" and "lowest Price" sorting is working but not the "Highest Buy Now` and "Lowest Buy Now"

To top it off, Previously when you clicked the `More Options` Link next to the search bar to access the expired search feature, The Categories Field would be Auto-selected to match the category you are actually in when making that particular search.

Now the category Field defaults to "All categories".

Not only does this mean you have to manually scroll down to make your desired choice but the list only goes to a depth of one Sub category.

This means there seems to be no way to limit an expired auction search to just a single category such as Electronics-photography/camera-accessories/battery-chargers/panasonic

The reason page two wont load...

The link is entered as
http://page-2.htm/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Damn... I've just hit the page two bug as well. Surely TM must be aware of this by now? All they have to do
is put it back the way it was before and fix the broken link. Sheeesh!

You have to wonder how much tinkering they do to create all these glitches.

Don`t they perform any checking at all after making changes?

its pretty worrying if they don`t.
I really can picture a major outage occurring one day.

There`s another problem that has just popped this mourning up but has seemed to be fixed already.
Why is it you can no longer view more than one page at a time on gallery view latest listings. Everytime I do it the second page comes up featured first
The Expired search problem has not been fixed though
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Community/Mess ... 1&topic=10" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Can anyone enlighten me on what has happened to a current search not dropping in the search expired listings when clicking on More Options?? It used to be so handy when you searched for something and then clicked on More Options and it would drop it into the search bar, now it doens't for me and it's a bit of a nusience having to type it all in again.....

What would happen if TM unwittingly managed to employ a Malicious or spiteful Website developer.
Image the havoc or embarrassment they could reek by sneaking in some nasty code or a redirect to a porn site knowing its unlikely anyone will spot it until its too late.

incredibly it`s been a week and TM have STILL not fixed the movie category page link problem.
If i was a seller in that Category i would be Livid

Surely they cant be this slow and bureaucratic?

if you look at the different sub categories in the Movie Section, There Does not seem to be any consistency in the URL Path.

Page Two of Documentaries
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Movies-TV/DVDs ... allery.htm

Page One of Family
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Movies-TV/VHS/ ... -0265-.htm

Page one of Bulk DVD`s
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Movies-TV/mcat-0003-6210-.htm

Page Two of Bluray Action
http://www.trademe.co.nz/browse/categor ... 33-&page=2

What a mess
No wonder the system is so easy to break whenever TM change something

With such a dogs breakfast, I'm starting to think TM cannot correct the page 2 problem as they have changed the URL, Screwed it up and now cant find what the correct path to the Broken URL originally was.

There seems to be another category with a listing quantity total problem

Viewing the Electronics category from the TM Homepage comes up as

Image

Enter the actual category and the result changes to
http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Image

The `Memory card` and `batteries` total is off by a factor of 2 and the `Camera Accessories` is off by a factor of 3.

Batteries subcategory is also a mess - showing 5636 items on your last screen (5642 when I looked), but in fact only 2822 listings there.

And the annoying "can't find page two" bug is still active. When TM break things they take ages to realise these days.

More screwups reported on TM MB today:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Community/Mess ... 7&topic=10" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The lowest buynow price is also faulty. If you search expired listings for anything, say 'mag wheels' and then select the dropdown setting of lowest buynow, the results are all over the place.
I had a person email me today and ask me to take a look at a certain listing for them. They didn't give me the auction no or link so I just searched the title that they gave me (which was from the auction) and it didn't come up. They gave me the link after a few hours and I found it.... same title as I typed.
Heaps of different categories are not working correctly either, been happening a while.
For example: http://www.trademe.co.nz/clothing/girls ... es/size-11+" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Takes you to page one of size 11+ tops, click page 2 and it comes up with a huge mixture of sizes - anything from age 2 upwards.

If you have any auctions closing around now... then bad luck!
500 Internal server error
TM is limping along like an old goat at the moment.

Guess what... the "page 2" bug is back. What's up with TM these days? Are they employing children on work experience?
This is such a basic coding error that somebody needs to be retrained... and quickly!

It looks like TM have been fooling with their system again and all of my favourite bookmarked searches are nicely broken. Well
done to the TM team - if you set out to piss off your users you've made a damn fine job of it.

For example, I search for Canon film cameras, used, sorted by lowest price. Sounds easy, huh! Now TM have kindly widened
all of my searches to include things like services and houses for sale. That's useful... not. And all of my "lowest price" searches
have reverted to TM's preferred "best match". A search that last week produced a dozen or so results now throws up more than
1,000 - almost all of them irrelevant.

It's hard to see any logic behind TM's latest fiddling. Why institute changes that merely confuse the results and annoy your users?
Or does the TM development team live in a bubble?
