I normally don't watch any ads (thanks to MySky's 30x fast forward feature) but a passing glimpse of the TM logo inspired me to replay their first attempt at TV advertising. My first impression was "How unbelievably tacky!" The ad is awful and looks like it's been made as part of a school project. Then I read Lance Wigg's commentary in the NBR and discovered that there's actually an advertising agency responsible for this mess. Wiggs is pretty scathing and rightly so.
Like a poor movie following an excellent book, my understanding of what Trade Me is not at all reflected in that advertisement. I suspect many of the other members, staff and ex-staff feel similarly.
To me, this ad (which incidentally includes body parts which are banned on TM) completely misses the point. Did they even have a target audience in mind? How very embarrassing for one of NZ's most respected brands.
