Fake job ads on TradeMe

Irrational behaviour and incomprehensible decisions 101 - this is the place. If they're really silly, you could win a chocolate fish.* (* Highly unlikely and they're only virtual chocolate fish)

Fake job ads on TradeMe

Post by digidog » Sat Feb 15, 2014 9:53 pm

The Herald is running a story about fake job ads being placed on TradeMe and Seek. "Applicants" provide a raft of personal details to the scammers which result in identity theft and/or money mule scams. The story profiles one Auckland man who lost $6,000 after sending money via Western Union to the scammers.

We've been saying for years that the use of effective IP blocking would prevent overseas scammers from signing up with TradeMe and would seriously curtail this sort of scam. Why are TM still so reluctant to implement this simple and obvious measure which would dramatically increase the security of their site? Are they worried that the resulting drop in visitor numbers might impact on their claimed page views and subsequent advertising revenue?
