My Freeware Picks

Post by Foggyone » Wed Jul 04, 2007 7:01 am

I use and recommend all of the following free software to keep my system as free as possible of all the things that can slow it down, or cause it to grind to a halt.

1. Virus Checker. I use AVG free edition from Grisoft.com. I have had Mcafee but I dumped it as too resource hungry for my laptop. I have used this programme for years, and find it performs well. Going in and out of some less than salubrious sites I want a good virus checker.

2. Firewall. I use Zone Alarm free edition from Zone Alarm.( http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/ ... NZ&lang=en ). Windows firewall is not sufficient, it only monitors inward traffic. I have used this for years and have never been let down. You would be surprised at how many people do not use a firewall, it's the equivalent of leaving every one of your 64,000 doors and windows open when you go out. Just crazy.

3.(a) I use spybot Search and Destroy as my primary spyware removal ( http://www.spybot.info/ ) , care, there are programes that masquerade as genuine but are in fact malicious, so download only from trusted sites)

3.(b) I also use Adaware from Lavasoft. Download from http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007-F ... l&tag=top5. I have used this programme for years, usually run it after spybot to make sure nothing has been missed.

4. I run Ilsystem Wiper at system shutdown to clear internet cache and unwanted cookies ( http://www.iisoftware.net ). Also can be run at other times to clean internet cache/cookies. Has a save wanted cookies feature to save my homepage settings etc. Cookie droppers (including Google) get nothing out of me that I don't want them to have.

5. I run Regcleaner ( http://www.macecraft.com/ ) to clean Windows Registry of all the abandoned entries.

6. Finally, I use Ccleaner for a thorough system cleanout. Makes the system sparkle and run like new ( http://www.ccleaner.com/ ).
Total cost of all this freeware is $0.00

I have used all of these programmes for a considerable time, and never encountered any problems with any of them. Drop me a Private Message if you have any questions or comments.

I'd add Firefox and thunderbird (both from http://www.mozilla.com)

Just using firefox (is a web browser) cuts out heaps of security issues that IE (internet explorer) has.

If you really want clean and green (can you have a green pc?) dump windows and go either Mac or Linux

heaps of great non-microosft stuff out there (free too), instead of Office, get Star Office, instead of outlook express use thunderbird, instead of winzip get wintar (although winzip is microsoft is still costs) ...

That's what I have used for ages. It is an IE clone giving many enhancements over IE6.

Warning To Firefox Users.

If you have both Firefox and IE loaded on your computer you are at risk of the latest exploit.

Here is the story.

The exploit appears to start when browsing with IE, so users who use Firefox exclusively may be less at risk.

It all seems to be because the big boys can't play nicely together.
