How to spot a fake GHD straightener

Fake copies of Microsoft Office, operating systems, memory cards and flash drives, fake designer clothing... anything of that nature. At any given time TM offers thousands of fake itmes which breach their terms & conditions... and often do little about the problem. This is the place to discuss the issue.

How to spot a fake GHD straightener

Post by digidog » Wed Jul 04, 2007 1:30 am

There are thousands of these fake GHDs being sold on TradeMe at the
moment. This handy eBay Guide helps you to identify the genuine items.

eBay review - GHD...

Can you ever imagine TradeMe alerting their members to fakes like this?

Update - July 2010
You can use this site to check the validity of any online GHD site. (Thanks to
Foggyone for the link).

Watch out for stew007. Rang GHD to be told this trader is not legit and they have had many problems with fake GHD's from trademe.

Not sure if they sell on TM but does anyone have any feedback on www.straighteners.co.nz? $190 for a pair of GHDs is really cheap.
In saying that, they look real!! Can't spot any of the fake parts as described in ebay guide

Hi allblack and welcome to ScamBusters. We've certainly come across a
lot of fake GHD straighteners being sold on TradeMe though we haven't
heard of this company previously.

This is pretty standard advice, but if any product seems to be too cheap
then be very careful. Can I ask how you came across this company?

Partner was looking for pair so she did a google.
Website looks very professional. The product and the packaging looks like the real deal. All seals and holograms are in place.
Partner has contacted GHD to see if it is a legit dealer

That's better. (I've edited my previous post).

Once again this domain has only been registered since July so it's a fairly
new company. The site is based on a free template so not a lot of money
has been spent there. The FAQ is empty and the contact page only has a
form - we'd prefer to see phone numbers and a physical address for any
reputable company.

How did you come across these people?

She did a google search I believe.

If they are fake, someone is doing a bloody good job of it!!

There is a problem with registering the 15 digit code so GHD has been contacted.
I have contacted the seller too. See what he has to say. If it is fake I will do my bloody best to take him down. If not I will highly recommend them :-)

Just to clarify, your partner has already bought a set of straighteners from
these people and the serial number appears to be fake? Is that correct?

yes she has bought them.

The registration says that they can't be registered and asks to contact GHD.
Does the rego page normally say this or does it specifically say that they are fake?

Here's the official GHD site. Note that the NZ site appears to have stolen
images from the real one. If they're not accredited with GHD then a spot
of plagiarism looks likely.

Probably fake by the sound of it. Give GHD a call.

Yeah they have been contacted, waiting for reply.

They look 100% real. Unbelievable

A $100 price difference is huge. Too good to be true...

You'd be surprised how many of these fakes get sold via TradeMe. Please
let us know how you get on.

Will do

So do the fakes on TM come in completely sealed boxes, have booklets, dvd and the holograms in correct places? Even the dvd has the GHD logo engraved in the center.
