Fake Originals and REPRINTS? of signed photos on TradeMe

Fake copies of Microsoft Office, operating systems, memory cards and flash drives, fake designer clothing... anything of that nature. At any given time TM offers thousands of fake itmes which breach their terms & conditions... and often do little about the problem. This is the place to discuss the issue.

Fake Originals and REPRINTS? of signed photos on TradeMe

Post by BlueNZ » Sun Apr 26, 2009 7:32 pm

I ran across the listings of a member named "barbie_ken" today on trademe and was intrigued to see that they sold 'reprints' of signed photos as well as originals. I had to ask if this was even legal - reproducing a signature/autograph. I then had a look at the listings for the 'original' photos and had a laugh when I saw the Certificate of Authenticity was signed by what seems to be a username "COLLECTMEMUSA" with only an email address of collectmemusa@yahoo.com for contact details or verification. Now, I've been around the block a few times and I'd say this is a scam if I've ever seen one. Any opinions?

I guess most potential buyers have noticed the "REPRINT" in capital letters.
He/she has 60 current listings and no bids at all. The $8.95 courier fee for
one photo is also over the top.

We've discussed the sale of autographs here before and agreed that it's a
very dodgy market.

The whole point is even the "originals" are fakes and the reprints are, in all definitions of the word, forgeries as well. I've taken advantage of my new Top Seller helpline to drop TradeMe an email about this member and hope for action -
"Hi there, I was asked to contact you regarding a member that sells under the name of barbie_ken on Trade Me. A friend purchased a very expensive "original" signed photo and received a printed copy with a false Certificate of Authenticity from a "CollectMemUSA" who could not be found anywhere and the seller refuses to give information on this so-called authenticator aside from an email address which does not get answers. How can someone sell obvious forgeries and reprints of forgeries on Trade Me? We are taking this matter to Fair Go but thought we should bring it to your attention before taking that step. Please let us know what you have done as it would really put our minds at rest to know such a person isn't taking advantage of kiwis through your site."
Thanks for the links to previous threads, it's making good reading!

The Fair Go reference may just prompt TM to take action. Let us know
how you get on.

The Intellectual Property Investigators were already off work but a member of the customer service team has forwarded it to them and replied letting me know they're looking into it...

Both of these traders are still selling autographed items "authenticated" by
the very dodgy (see above) Christopher Morales.

Notice that one poor sucker is responsible for most of the current bids. There
really is one born every minute.
