JerryLocal - new trading site

Post by plinuckment » Tue Apr 26, 2016 2:55 am

Today I got an unsolicited email advertising a new trading site, Jerry Local. It's a reasonably "good-looking" site at first glance, but the FAQ and Help pages sound like they were created with the aid of Google Translate.

https://www.jerrylocal.co.nz/about-us.html
We are based in Christchurch, have a small team who spends hours designing each new feature and obsess about the smallest details.

The unsolicited email (spam) is not a good start. Let's have a look at the domain records to see who is behind the site. Firstly it's registered through Crazy Domains in Dubai which is not neccesarily a bad thing, but you'd generally expect a local site to use a local registrar. The site owner is:
Ronal Panchal
2/16 Braddon St., Christchurch
The admin and tech contacts are the same guy, but at a different address.
159 Broughan St., Christchurch
There's an IT guy with that name in Ahmedabad, India, and another in Auckland. It's hard to tell if either of these are the same Ronal.

Companies House shows the business was first registered in June of last year. The domain was first registered in October 2015.

The site runs quite slowly, suggesting an offshore server. The IP address traces to 52.62.3.0 which belongs to Amazon in the US. He bought his logo for $AU379 using a Spanish "get designers cheap" site. Rather than being translated via Google, I suspect that english is a second language for the owner. His Youtube sales video (13 views so far) has an American accent but there are a few weird sentence constructions, such as:
"No fees, unless you make successfully sale via JerryLocal."
...and bring them smile on million faces
The poor grasp on English continues on the site"
In simple Word, “Make your dream comes true in shopping space”.
Unlike TradeMe, buyers pay the site owner for their goods, and only get paid after delivery and acceptance. That represents a considerable risk for sellers. Contact is via a feedback form but there is no NZ phone number anywhere on the site. That's not acceptable when they're accepting money on the seller's behalf. Success fees are 7% plus a transaction fee of 3% per sale, (5%+3% on electronics), making the site considerably more expensive for sellers than TradeMe.

The site claims to provide access to over 4 million customers, but I suspect that's quite an exaggeration. It has a Google rank of zero.

This appears to be just another run-of-the-mill listing site with very few visitors. The spam emails, the exceptionally high fees and the fact they take all payments on behalf of sellers would definitely put me off ever selling on the site.

This is destined to be just another also-ran.

Maybe "Jerry-Built" would be more appropriate. Heh heh.
