Hi Chris... welcome to ScamBusters and thanks for your kind comments. This
type of scam is becoming quite widespread and deserves some attention from
the mainstream media. The more people who are aware of the scam, the less
chance of the scammers claiming victims. Spread the word.

Yet another one - TXT at 8 oclock this morning - Amy Scott [lilamyscott@gmail.com] - I have a problem being convinced they are not based closer to home - 8 am means 5 am in Malayasia!!!

Hello,
Thanks for the swift reply, What is your asking price and i want you to get back to me with more pictures of the engine and the dashboard because i am presently offshore and i am unable to inspect the car and make phone calls, i am in Malaysia and i will be using the vehicle here in Malaysia. I will be handling the pick up of this merchandise through a legitimate shipping agent that has their headquarter situated in Malaysia . Please note that i will not be needing the vehicle registration because it will be invalid over here so please remove the registration. The vehicle will be picked up after you receive the full payment, so i really need to know the mode of payment because i need this vehicle urgently. Hope to read from you asap.

You can do texts via the internet, and these can no doubt be set up to run whenever you want.

Our company uses an Indian service to send texts to our NZ customers, and it's MUCH cheaper than the local service.
Google, the answer to so many questions!

this is the last email I got

Debbie Frecklington
to me

show details 7:46 PM (58 minutes ago)

Thanks a lot. I have read everything about the bike on the website and
everything is okay by me.
I have actually tried to get this bike here earlier from here but most
of the ones I got either have one huge mechanical fault or the other
and some have even had accidents in the past while some are extremely
exorbitant.
As to the price, Price is Ok. So if you deem
the offer good enough, I will be very glad to make the payment asap
but i can only conclude this transaction only via paypal(http://www.paypal.com/nz" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
as I am currently offshore and I won't
definitely be able to make it to my bank to make bank wires across to you.
As to shipping, you need not worry yourself about how the bike will get
to me here in the Malaysia as I will contact a shipping company here who
will handle that.
Do get back to me asap with your PayPal Email address and Full name so
that I can remit the payment asap.

Hey all, first time poster as I only just encountered this david.sallama@sify.com after posting a couch me and my girlfriend put up on an australian website gumtree.com.au!

here's the email he sent in 'interest' of the piece:

'Thanks for the swift response and do as well advise on the least amount you will like to give it away as i am buying this for Dad and due to the nature of my job and location...i will not be able to come for inspection,am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it.

As for the payment..i can only pay via the fastest and secure way to pay online(PayPal) here.

I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after the payment have been made ...so no shipping included and With the issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the courier services company agent so you don't have to worry about that.

You can now send me your PayPal email so i can pay in right away and also include your address in your reply. If you don't have a paypal account, you can easily set up one...log on to http://www.paypal.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and sign up its very easy... i would have loved to talk to you on phone but i work mainly offshore, our phone is down on the rig right now due to bad weather, that was why i sent you a text, i even wonder how my message deliver to your phone but for now we can only communicate through the same mailing channel.await your reply asap'

Nice prepared scam email he sent hey! I sent my own back with colourful language pretty much insinuating that he's wasting perfectly good people's oxygen.

Thought I should let you all know of this jerk again.

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave and welcome to ScamBusters. These people have become a lot more
credible recently. It's like they employ a native English speaker to work on
their email templates. Well done in spotting the scam so fast. Sadly, a lot
of victims aren't so savvy.

Trademe/Paypal Car Scam Still Going Strong

Post by AnnaMac » Wed Dec 15, 2010 9:44 pm

Hi everyone,
I can join the club - I'm currently listing a campervan on Trademe, and within 24 hours received a text from a "Dave Heenan" (via an online messaging service, no number) asking me to email him more info about the van to davehnn@hotmail.co.uk. I did so, with details about where we are and when might suit for a test-drive. Then I received this:

"Thanks for the quick reply and will like to purchase it.
What is your firm price? i will be paying you with my PayPal because it's attached to my bank account.
I am a petroleum engineer on a rig offshore and do not have much time on me.
Make sure you get back to me so that i can arrange for pick up as i will like the camper to be picked,so no shipping included.
I await your reply"

The grammar rung alarm bells and it sounded suspicious, but just about plausible - perhaps English isn't his first language, perhaps he's frantically typing into his iPhone, perhaps he's got more money than sense! I'm pretty familiar with how PayPal works, so from the outset I knew that I'd want to make sure the money was in our bank account (not just our PayPal account, where it can still be subjected to a charge-back if the buyer calls their credit card company instructing them not to authorize that payment.)

But when we got the below email, it was time to google the words scam, paypal and vehicle, and I found this useful post at http://www.suite101.com/content/car-buy ... al-a215956" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"I was just about to make the payment when i had this little problem with the picking up,I got an email from my agent..i taught i included that in my previous email.he said he won't come for the inspection and pick up the camper unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time ,and my pick up agent head quarters is in the United Kingdom and all commission payments made for pick up, from anywhere in the world is sent to their head quarters in the Uk and the only form of payments they accept is western union money transfer and i tried to pay online but they referred me to an agent location to pay by cash because of some security reasons, and there is no post office(there is usually a western union section in most post offices) or any western union agent offshore! so i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, i will include the $950NZD they charged to pick it (due to the price and weight of camper)up and take it my home(1st class treatment),to the payments i will send through paypal, after i have made the payments, i will need you to help me send the $950NZD to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, the western union money transfer can be made at a post office near to you, there is always a western union agent in most post offices or online at http://www.westernunion.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE WILLING TO HELP ME SEND THE MONEY TO MY SHIPPING AGENT COMPANY AND I WILL INCLUDE THE PICK UP FEE TO THE TOTAL PAYMENT"

It's interesting to read the similarities, and slight variations in other scam emails. Obviously this scam isn't exclusive to Trademe, as they seem to target classified advert posters all over the world. But I do wish there was an effective forum on the Trademe website for reporting things like this....

Hi AnnaMac and welcome to Scambusters.

Unfortunately your experience is by no means isolated. Anyone who lists a vehicle seems to be fair game if the scammers can come up with an email address.

This scam falls under the heading "Crimes of Persuasion". They are trying to get you to do something (send money overseas against the receipt of non existent funds). The scam works by "showing" you that funds are held by an intermediary such as Paypal by using forged emails or stolen credit cards etc. You will always be asked to send part of the funds on, but in due course will find that there are no funds.

Another variation is to overpay you with a Bank cheque. You will be asked to send the excess on once funds have cleared(keeping an amount for your "honesty"). In due course your bank will advise you that the cheque was stolen or forged, and give all the money back.

For the record:

Toyota Lucida Camper 1994

Just a word of caution. You are dealing with crooks, and one day they will twig that this correspondence gives them an opportunity to slip malware onto your computer (particularly if you use a version of Windows). They could then harvest all your log ins for Trademe, Bank, emails etc. While I haven't heard this happening yet in conjunction with this scam, it will at some time in the future. Therefore the usual advice about keeping your windows up to date, having a good firewall and up to date good virus checker, and not opening files from unknown people should be heeded. Even these defenses may fail to a cunning crook, so be careful.
Google, the answer to so many questions!

Hi Foggyone,
Thanks for the great advice about my listing. We're a Mac household, primarily for the reasons you mention, but I know this doesn't make us immune to security breaches. Thankfully we've actually just sold the van so I've been able to take the ad down.
Just want to say thank you for a great site - it was so useful, and somehow reassuring, to discover this resource on the web when we were getting those dodgy emails....

Just thought you guys might be interested to know he's at it again, trying to sell my van on Gumtree, after he got in touch from the english mobile number 0044508440059 and I'd sent him some more photos he asked me to do a Western Union favour for him...

I am happy to read from you,i really appreciate it,i am an oceanographer and am currently at sea at the moment,i am buying the car as a gift for my dad, i want to make it a surprise for him,he wont know anything about the car until it get delivered to him,i can only pay through pay pal as i don't have access to my bank account online and i don't have internet banking, but i have my bank account attached to my pay pal account and this is why i insisted on paying you through pay pal,So pls kindly get back to me with your pay pal details so i can proceed with the payment and after the payment has been made, i have a pick up agent that will come around to inspect and pick the car up after i have made the payments for the item what is your reserve price, and would be happy if you could remove the ads from the site and once am provided with your paypal email address i will send in payment.

I'll keep an eye on my paypal. Do you have a phone number for whoever
is going to come and collect the van or an address where I can take
it?

I can help you with your Western Union transfer, if you send me the
details and the money I can take it to a W.U branch for you.

Re: Malaysian Trademe/Paypal Car Scam

Post by cabalnz1 » Sun Mar 27, 2011 11:04 pm

Yet another new one - first a TXT from 502 which is not a valid number so I replied to the email and the I get an email from Gary Vallance [gary2548@gmail.com] - Hello.

I'm satisfied with the condition of the car listed. I'm ready to buy this car and will be paying you through PayPal (http://www.paypal.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) which is a fast, safe and reliable method of payment and i will be paying the paypal charges too.. And i will take care of all Shipment Preparations for the car to my home.

Please send me your asking price. so we can go further about the payment

Please Advice.

So I sent him the wrong price!!! What a fish!! He He
