Good stuff - the a/d to send anything to is abuse@trademe.co.nz but they don't tell you!! It is in their warning email they send you if your listing is looked at from overseas.

Haha i got this email after advertising on T/me. What does anyone think...scam????

Email as follows:
Hi there, Thank you for getting back to me.Can you assure me that it's in good state and that i will not be disappointed with it.I'm ready to pay your asking price and to be honest, i wanted to buy this for my son, but the issue is i am an oceanographer and i do have a contract to go for which starts tomorrow and am leaving any moment from now..The contract is strictly no call due to the lack of reception on the sea area. But I'm able to access email anytime as we will make use of laptop so my only quickest payment option is PayPal as i can send money via PayPal anytime.Since I'm requesting this transaction to be done via PayPal, i will be responsible for all the paypal fee/charges on this transaction and if you don't have an account with paypal, its pretty easy, safe and secured to open one. Just log on to http://www.paypal.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? I have a mover that will come for it once payment clears and they will get it to my son's location safely.

If my mode of payment is accepted kindly email me with the information below to proceed with the payment.

1) The pictures
2) What is the condition?
3) Are you the Original Owner?
4) Your PayPal Email Address
5) Your Picked Up Location Address

Get back to me with your address so i can forward to the shipping company to schedule an appointment with you for pick up. I have a private pick up agent that will come for the pick up after payments has been made. So i look forward to hear from you soon.

It is DEFINITELY the same scam and the notification you will get from Paypal is not really from them - so beware and as trademe says - dont send money overseas - only a NZ bank or OZ or cash

And yet again this morning - this time he is getting clever - he uses Maori as agreeting "Kia Ora - is your car still for sale?" and the number has changed to NZ 006436132603 - ha ha very good - unfortunately NO SUCH NUMBER - no surprise Mr Rodney Walkingdall at gmail.com - I am waiting for his reply - I wonder if he is an oceanographer today or on an oil rig??

This guy contacted me about my car asking to see more photos of the interior via text from +442032892491 and requested I email them to walkingdall@gmail.com

I emailed them and received the following reply:

Hello.

I'm satisfied with the condition, I'm ready to buy this car and will be paying you through PayPal (http://www.paypal.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) which is a fast, safe and reliable method of payment and i will be paying the paypal charges too.. Please tell me your bottom dollar so that we can discuss further about the payment

Please Advise.

A quick google search for 'Rodney Attwood' led me here. Thanks guys, thought I'd add my experience.

gmail prevents you from using the email headers to find out which country these lowlifes work from.

If you want to find this information you need to get them to swap to another free email provider. Experience shows that these crooks have an almost inexhaustible supply of email accounts already set up. If you want to do this you need to socially engineer them onto hotmail, yahoo or something similar.

How to socially engineer these crooks.

It's simple, you use their greed against them. You need to get them thinking you are a likely victim, but can't use gmail. Something like this will work..
Hi.
Yes, I would like to sell you the car, but I see you are using gmail. My ISP has advised they are in litigation with Google (the owners of gmail) and inward emails from this provider may not reach their target. Given this, it would be helpful if you could use another email provider. Look forward to hearing from you.
Then stop answering emails from gmail. They WILL swap, and you can get the IP address from the email header.

Other lines than may work...

My virus checker is deleting some emails from gmail
My employer no longer accepts emails from gmail because of recent problems

Just let your imagination run wild. That's what these creeps do.

Some more details relating to walkingdall@gmail.com aka Rodney Attwood. The UK cell phone number they use (+442032892491) won't receive calls / txts.

The bottom dollar I 'negotiated' with him was twice my original asking price, and the condition of the interior I described as 'cracked, stained & really pretty rough' (photos on TradeMe show it's as new condition), but that was all fine with 'Rodney', the marine engineer on a ship in the Bahamas.

They use a domain 'paypal-nz.com' for the bogus PayPal emails that is registered to
Amir Lavi (gary2548@gmail.com)
914 Shirefield Lane
Spring
Texas,77373
US
Tel. +1.5712505748

They ask for the Western Union 'courier' payment to be paid to:
Stewart Dunn
11 Bree Hill
Chelmsford
Essex
CM3 7AD
United Kingdom

An 'email ID' PP307 is used, the same 'id' was in an email inadvertendly sent to me by them, though addressed to another target scam-ee.

The latest email reads:
Dear Customer,
We are contacting you regarding your Transaction with Rodney Attwood, We are looking forward to receiving the Western Union receipt from you, and you are required to send the Western Union information to us within the next 24 Hours or Legal Action will be taken against you.

You are required to send to us the Western Union Information Stated Below for Verification:
(1) Sender's Name;
(2) Receiver's Name;
(3) MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number);
(4) Amount Sent;
(5) Western Union Receipt

We urge you to go and send the $2,000.00 NZD now, and send us the western union information as soon as possible. You can contact us if you have any question(s).

A. Williams,
The PayPal Team.

Hi Phillip and welcome to ScamBusters. In general this is a money laundering scam and the scammers don't
care if they score any cars at all. They'll overpay the seller using stolen credit cards or hacked bank accounts
then ask for the difference to be refunded via (anonymous) Western Union. They'll score a few hundred dollars
from each person who falls for the scam, so it's worth them cranking out template emails all day.

Of course, if TradeMe were to block IP ranges from the suspect countries (Nigeria, etc) then this sort of scam
would disappear from TM overnight.
